Course: Planning Cycle Basics

Duration: 2 days; registration at 8:00 AM day one, class begins at 8:30 AM; class ends at 4:00 PM final day.

Overview: Advanced planning and scheduling tools still depend on the basics- establishing a doable master schedule, exploding bills of material to determine quantity and timing requirements, and verifying available capacity. Many organizations struggle even after establishing a theoretical base with the problems of running the business every day- maintaining priorities, responding to a blizzard of exception messages, and resisting the temptation to build side or standalone systems instead of using MRP. The Planning Cycle Basics Class establishes the theory behind the heart of the planning cycle- MPS, Rough Cut, MRP and CRP, provides methods to use in daily operations and department alignment, and shows how the basic planning cycle serves as the base platform for extended systems. It also stresses the ease and necessity of integrating capacity planning with material planning.

Who should attend: Master Schedulers, planners, buyer/planners

Agenda:

Setting the stage:

  • The Planning Cycle's role within the entire closed-loop system

  • Product definition and accuracy requirements for the planning cycle- lot sizes, inventory accuracy, lead time, bills of material, etc.

  • The effect of to-order or to-stock and discrete/repetitive/process environments on the planning cycle

Master Production Scheduling (MPS)

  • How establishing a viable MPS drives the rest of the system

  • Balancing conflicting objectives, satisfying stakeholders and aligning the MPS with the Sales and Operations Plan (S&OP)

  • What to include, how to sequence items and use variations such as two-level MPS

  • How to realistically schedule and review large numbers of items

  • Changing role of the Master Scheduler

Rough Cut Capacity Planning

  • How to define and prioritize resources to be included in Rough Cut

  • The ease of implementing Rough Cut vs. other systems

  • How close do we need to be?

  • Alternatives if Rough Cut shows the MPS isn't doable

Material Requirements Planning (MRP)

  • MRP's role in the total ERP system

  • Why MRP is never wrong (but the inputs might be)

  • How to review and firm requirements for large numbers of items

  • Organizing the planners/buyers: families, common items, BOM levels

  • Software package tools to use, and those to avoid

  • Reorder point (ROP) systems vs. MRP

  • Common reasons why planners ignore MRP (data requirements, ease of use, etc.) and use other systems- and how to respond

Capacity Requirements Planning (CRP)

  • Contrasted with Rough Cut

  • Level of resource availability data required, and why much of it is already in place from other areas

  • Infinite vs. finite capacity scheduling tools

  • Ease of review, and how CRP is the final planning cycle signoff

The Basic Planning Cycle and other systems:

  • Planning and production floor scheduling

  • Distribution network planning

  • Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) systems

Each area includes: Typical policy issues, comprehensive performance measurement definition, glossary, exercise or quiz.

Fee: $850 US for 2 days; $700 per person when 2 or more attend from same company. Includes materials and handouts, continental breakfast, lunch and coffee service but not dinner, lodging or transportation.
