Systematic Problem-solving skills

Every organization has different types of problems, and approaches solving those problems in a different way. Minor problems may get ignored until they become urgent, or tackled in place of solving more important issues. Major problems, once resolved, may reoccur because the solution was not built into an ongoing process.

Systematic problem-solving skills involve a variety of methods that present efficient ways to make use of individual and team knowledge, take advantage of both logic and creativity, and create systems and processes that allow solutions to become part of an ongoing effort instead of a one-time cure. The keys behind process improvement programs like constraints management and six sigma are not necessarily the specific techniques, but the development of thinking and problem-solving skills that allow resolving a variety of situations on a timely, systematic basis.

Because people have different personality traits and problems have varying characteristics,  having a toolkit of techniques is very useful- there's more than one way to attack a problem. Examples of problem-solving skills include, among others:

  • Brainstorming

  • Five why's

  • TRIZ

  • FMEA

  • Root cause analysis

  • decision trees

  • fishbone diagrams

  • force field analysis

  • interviewing

  • Delphi technique

  • SWOT analysis

  • visualization tools

  • models and metaphors

  • what-if analysis
