Course: Cycle Counting and Record Accuracy

Duration: 1 day; registration at 8:00 AM, class begins at 8:30 AM; class ends at 4:00 PM.

Overview: Every planning and order promising system depends on an accurate status of what is onhand; incorrect inventory numbers create shortages, expediting, higher safety stock levels and a number of other suboptimal conditions. This class shows how to devise a systematic approach to keeping inventory accurate, uncover procedural and process problems, and make reliable inventory numbers a 'given'.

Who should attend: Materials managers, operations managers, logistics managers, warehouse managers, internal auditors

Agenda:

The cycle counting framework

  • Cycle counting vs. physical inventory and on-demand counts

  • Correcting onhand records vs. resolving process problems

  • Defining accuracy measurements and setting goals

  • Assembling the right cycle counting team and determining personnel requirements

Defining the process

  • Identifying inventory transaction types, processes and timing

  • Identifying the types of inventory- raw material, finished goods, consigned, at third parties, what's 'in-between'- WIP and in-transit

  • Selecting the best cycle count technique: ABC code, transaction volumes, by location, control groups and others

  • Conducting the count: blind counts, tags, auto-identification, weigh counts, counting partials, when to recount

  • Reconciling inaccuracies: how did we get here?

Evaluating the process

  • Identifying problem products and processes

  • Evaluating stocking points, material flow and access systems

  • Creating incentive, reward and ongoing processes

  • Working with auditors and eliminating the annual physical inventory

Each area includes: Typical policy issues, glossary, case study or exercise.

Fee: $475 US for 1 day; $375 per person when 2 or more attend from same company. Includes materials and handouts, continental breakfast, lunch and coffee service but not dinner, lodging or transportation.
