Business process modeling

Why do organizations need business process modeling and mapping? As companies have learned the value of viewing business activities as a series of linked processes instead of isolated tasks, activities and departments, they use process modeling techniques in order to:

  • Understand the true current state before moving to future state- six sigma and process improvement programs

  • Identify and separate types of activities in the value stream

  • Enable ISO certification, document and procedure management

  • Fulfill FDA or other government and third party requirements

  • Create supply chain partner collaboration systems

  • Map business processes to new software system functions

  • Make outsourcing decisions

:: Components of a business process model

A business process is composed of linked steps or functions, which in turn are made up of tasks or activities. Identifying the individual steps and corresponding tasks, and how they are linked is the initial step. Understanding the linked flows between steps identifies the event triggers and input and output involved at each step. Each individual activity within the steps uses resources (people, components, machinery, IT/software support, etc.), is done at a certain frequency (hourly, daily, etc.) and has a planned and actual duration that can be measured. The type and attributes of the steps form the basis for creating data collection systems, performance measurements and types of documents and data required.

:: Bridgefield Group modeling methodology

Our structured approach in modeling the as-is process and identifying gaps vs. the desired future state is based on the purpose for defining the model (internal requirement, external or both), timeline and internal resources available. We typically use an iterative interview and review process and workflow summary sheets with process owners and Subject Matter Experts (SME). Along with analysis, we produce graphical models and supporting documentation in both summarized and detailed formats for use at various levels in the organization, and for acceptance by a third party.
